Suidoosterfees Talent Search headed to Observatory

The annual Suidoosterfees is in its 15th year and will take place in the heart of Cape Town from 26 April to 1 May, 2018. Next year’s festival will have the theme Fabulous 15/Fantastiese 15/Zemikhosi 15 and aims to bring communities from across the Western Cape together to celebrate and promote local arts.

The festival is currently in the process of conducting its fourth annual talent search, which aims to identify talented young artists between the ages of 9-25 from local communities. From here, the young artists are given the opportunity to develop their talents and to receive mentorship from professional artists and industry veterans. The talent search is looking for enterprising youngsters in the categories of vocals, instruments, dancing, acting, magic and more.

The talent search is coming to the Magnet Theater in Observatory, Cape Town on Saturday, 28 October. Thereafter, the final qualifying round will be conducted at The Stage Performing Arts Studio in Bellville on Saturday, 4 November.

Five finalists from Saturday, 21 October’s talent search in Langa have already been chosen and will be going through to the semi-final in March next year. They are Zimasa (dramatic arts), Black 100 (acapella group), Ikhwezi Theatre Group (dramatic arts) Venom Blaq (rap and spoken word) and Em Kay de Poet (poetry and spoken word).

For the qualifying rounds, judges include the well-known actor Sne Dladla, performing artist Riaan Visman and acclaimed director Lindi Smit. The SOF Talent Search semifinal will take place on 10 March, 2018 at the V&A Waterfront with the finals taking place on 28 April, 2018 as part of the annual Suidoosterfees in Cape Town.

2018 Suidoosterfees highlights will include Emo Adams, Bobby van Jaarsveld and Katlego Maboe in a swing show with Capetonian and Karoo sounds. Celebrities like Shaleen Surtie-Richards, Vinette Ebrahim and Evita Bezuidenhout will also be present while the jazz icon Melanie Scholtz will be performing in Cape Town Tango.
