The 15th Suidoosterfees (SOF) will take place from 26 April to 1 May at Artscape in Cape Town, and invites guests to an early sneak-preview this December. Attend a night of fabulous double bill entertainment at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch on Friday, 15 December at 18:00. Entrance is entirely free for the #Fab15 Varieté.
“Suidoosterfees 2018’s theme is Fantastic 15/Fabulous 15/Uchunge Chunge 15 and comprises projects that give festivalgoers a taste of the culture of areas like the Cape Flats, Boland, Swartland and Karoo. By showcasing this local art, we unite communities across the Western Cape and bring together South Africans in the heart of Cape Town once a year. Isn’t that fantastic?” says Niël Rademan, CEO of Suidoosterfees.
The Suidoosterfees recently conducted their fourth annual Talent Search, which is an outreach project that goes into various communities in and around the greater Cape metropolitan area to identify talent across various artistic disciplines. Once identified, the aim is to create professional platforms in the arts industry for these individuals to showcase their prowess. The first performance of the night at 18:00 is free of charge and presents concertgoers a taste of South Africa’s youth on stage.
“Over the past 3 years we have come across some of the most talented youngsters in these communities. They range from interpretive dance groups, to rap, singing and more. Through the Fab 15 Varieté we wish to yet again create an opportunity for them to be part of a professional production so they may share their wonderful talent with a broader audience,” Rademan says. “We invite you to a taste of our country’s unique cultural smorgasbord.”
At 20:00 the next production, CARMEN petit BIZET, will take the stage. This concert version of one of the most popular operas in the classical canon is condensed to an hour-long work for this occasion, without compromising the integrity of the original work. All the highlights are presented in a chronological order, with the performers interpreting more than one role. Tickets are R180 per person.
