Strand Street in Lamberts Bay was abuzz on Saturday, 2 December with the grand opening of High Tide Restaurant. Guests were greeted with a wide variety of wine from Teubes Family Wines, as well as plates filled with fresh oysters. Underneath white umbrellas guests socialised outside the newly renovated building that is now home to one of the finest restaurants on the West Coast.
All the guests attending the opening received red carpet treatment from owners Ida Degenaar and French chef Julien Debray. While sipping on their wine, guests could mingle with the other attendees, rub shoulders with the guests of honour and listen to beautiful live classical music.
During the course of the evening waiters presented some of Debray’s creations, that included finger food for the connoisseur. Just when guests though the evening couldn’t get any more spectacular, two fire dancers showed up to end off the evening’s festivities.
“Fantastic atmosphere, windstill eve, great music, fire dancers, food and wine to die for, and being in the company of great people and making new friends, all this made Lamberts Bay lekker!” said Karin Camara, one of the night’s attendees.
According to Ida, the restaurant’s style and vibe resembles fine fresh West Coast cuisine. The restaurant is situated next to Teubes Family Wines’ tasting room and their wide variety of wines are also available at the restaurant.
The building housing High Tide Restaurant was built in the 1930s and previously housed another eatery. 80 years later, the winds have changed have ushered in a new hotspot and High Tide’s owners are eager to welcome you with true West Coast hospitality.
“When I got the opportunity to open the restaurant, I started dreaming. But I said I will only do it if I can have Julien Debray as a partner on this project. And he said yes!” Ida explained and added that they both have a passion for food. Their dream for the restaurant is for it to become a destination restaurant.
“Real fresh food bursting with flavour is our signature and I’ll be overjoyed if this lies in our future,” said Ida.
Being close to the sea and the Lamberts Bay Waterfront, the seafood on offer is fantastic. High Tide, however, doesn’t just cater to seafood lovers. According to Ida they also have steak, pork belly that is “to die for” and lamb on the menu. Julien grew up in France and now has the space to present his natural cooking talent to the visitors of the West Coast.
“Anything that is freshly available and in season begs for Julien’s creativity,” Ida explained.
The restaurant’s prices range from quite affordable, to options for when you want to treat yourself or someone special. They have starters, main meals and desserts. According to Ida the whole family is welcome at their restaurant. Although they don’t have an extended menu for children, young ones can enjoy a delicious kids’ burger, hake and chips or chicken strips.
“We want to present food and wine that will linger on the palate long after visitors have gone home,” Ida explained and added that they want to add value and support to the people of Lamberts Bay.
Ida met Julien in Riebeek Valley after moving there in 2009. Julien was born in France and has been living in South Africa for the past 18 years.
“I think the opening of the restaurant was a great success. People are very positive about our new venture. Thanks to Julien, the food served at the opening was excellent. And a very big thank you to the Teubes family for the fantastic wine,” said Ida.
This restaurant is an absolute must visit.
